April 2025 Spice Market Update: Tariffs, Trade Shifts & What We’re Doing About It
Several key spices are facing steep tariff increases and shifting trade dynamics, particularly from countries like Vietnam, China, and Indonesia. These changes are already impacting pricing, availability, and logistics for spice importers and buyers across the U.S.
At Majestic Spice, we believe in full transparency. Here’s a quick look at what’s happening, and how we’re working alongside our clients to find smart, reliable solutions.
Black Pepper from Vietnam & China
Vietnam: A 46% U.S. tariff on Vietnamese spices went into effect in early April. This has significantly affected black pepper, one of Vietnam’s top exports.
China: Imports face tariffs of up to 145%, combining existing and retaliatory rates.
What this means: Prices are rising fast, and availability is tightening. Brazil and India may serve as alternate sources, but supply volumes and quality levels vary — and costs are not guaranteed to be lower.
Garlic Granulated & Powdered from China
Both granulated and powdered garlic from China are now under a 35% U.S. tariff. These products were already dominant in the market due to their volume and price competitiveness.
Finding alternatives: India and Egypt are possible replacements, but challenges around yield, flavor consistency, and supply chain readiness remain.
Paprika 120 ASTA from China
While the exact tariff percentage isn’t specified for paprika, it falls under the broader category of Chinese spices subject to increased duties.
Challenges: Sourcing paprika with a consistent 120 ASTA (color value) quality is not easy. Spain and Peru offer options, but production volumes may not meet U.S. demand.
Nutmeg from Indonesia
Indonesia’s nutmeg exports are facing a 32% tariff — temporarily paused for 90 days. This pause gives a small window for negotiation, but the long-term outcome remains uncertain.
Why it’s hard to replace: Grenada and Sri Lanka do produce nutmeg, but not at the same volume or with the same price stability.
Mexican Oregano
So far, Mexican oregano remains unaffected by new tariffs thanks to the USMCA agreement. Trade is flowing as usual — for now.
Note: Mexican oregano is favored for its unique flavor profile, making it a staple that’s not easily replaced with Mediterranean or Turkish varieties.
