EU Pecan Demand Rises Despite U.S. Challenges
In 2024, the European Union has seen a significant increase in pecan imports, with volumes up by 18% compared to the previous year. The total imports reached 11,777 metric tons, valued at EUR 109 million. This rise is largely due to higher consumer demand for nuts across Europe, where the Netherlands, Germany, and Spain are the largest importers.
- Netherlands: The Netherlands accounts for the largest share, importing 42% of the EU’s total pecan volume, which translates to around 4,890 metric tons.
- Germany: Germany follows with 31% of the imports, amounting to approximately 3,640 metric tons.
- Spain: Spain imported 9% of the total, which equals about 1,020 metric tons.
The United States, a key supplier to the EU, has faced challenges due to severe droughts in Texas and hurricane impacts in Georgia, which have disrupted production. Despite these issues, U.S. exports to the EU have increased by 10% this year, reaching nearly 7,787 metric tons.
Mexico, another major player, has significantly expanded its exports to the EU by 52%, shipping about 3,635 metric tons. This increase highlights Mexico’s growing importance in the global pecan market, partly due to its practice of importing U.S. pecans, processing them, and then re-exporting them to Europe.
While the demand for pecans in Europe is on the rise, the supply chain remains sensitive to environmental factors, particularly in major producing regions like the U.S. and South Africa, where production has recently seen declines due to adverse weather conditions.
