Vietnam’s Pepper Prices Rebound Amid Growing Challenges

Last week, pepper prices in Vietnam saw a slight increase, rising from 145,000 VND to 148,000 VND per kilogram, which represents a 2% improvement. This rise in prices is supported by increased demand from key markets such as the European Union and Asia, where immediate orders have picked up. However, the United States market, a major buyer, remains focused on securing future contracts for late 2024 and early 2025, rather than immediate purchases.

Despite this price recovery, Vietnam’s pepper industry faces significant challenges. A prolonged drought earlier this year in April and May has delayed the upcoming 2025 harvest by one to two months. As a result, the harvest, which typically begins earlier, is expected to take place mainly between February and April 2025. The delay has also affected the quality of the crop, with many reports indicating that the pepper seeds are not maturing as they normally would at this time of year.

In addition to these domestic challenges, global market conditions are also influencing pepper prices. The recent interest rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve may lead to a stronger currency for pepper-exporting countries, including Vietnam, which could result in higher prices for pepper in US dollars. As Indonesia’s pepper harvest season comes to an end, Brazil will become the primary supplier, but Brazilian exporters have been reducing their offers in the market. Meanwhile, Vietnam’s limited stock is causing prices to rise with each transaction.

As the global market for pepper adjusts to these conditions, Vietnam faces the dual challenge of maintaining price competitiveness while addressing the quality concerns of its delayed harvest. The situation underscores the need for strategic adjustments to sustain its leading position in the global pepper trade.
